When we remove your braces, we will begin the retention stage of your treatment.
Retention is the most important part of your orthodontic treatment and all patients require retention after braces or aligners.
Retainers are used to reduce or stop undesirable movements, caused by elastic tissues in the gums, occurring once the braces are removed. They maintain the teeth in position wnile the soft and hard tissues adapt to the new tooth positions.
Though we will monitor your treatment result for a period of time once your braces are removed, the retention phase lasts for life. Scientific studies have shown that teeth have a tendancy to move throughout life, and is a natural part of the aging process. It is therefore important to think of things as a retention phase for the first 12 months after treatment, and a maintenance phase for the rest of your life.
Your final orthodontic result depends on both phases and so continuing to wear your retainers throughout the maintenance phase, will prolong your final reasult.
Retainer options include:
(fixed directly to the tongue side of your front upper or lower teeth)
(clear plastic retainer that covers your teeth)
(standard colored plastic retainer with wire)
